They change attitude, emotional state, and pain perception. They create hope and positivity and they help people cope with difficulties. They transform a person's outlook and way of being in the world.

Today it is recognized by neurophysiologists that art, prayer, and healing all come from the same source in the body. They are all associated with similar brain wave patterns. Mind and body changes and they are deeply connected in feeling and meaning. Art, prayer, and healing all take into the inner world, the world of imagery and emotion, of visions and feelings. This journey inward into what was used to be called the spirit or soul and is now called the mind is deeply healing. For healing comes from within, one’s own healing resources are freed to allow the immune system to operate optimally and that is always how it heals. This is the contemporary version of freeing the healing energies and is now recognized to be crucial to healing.

Pablo Picasso and George Braque were the two earliest modern collage artists, although there are several people in the art industry who claims the two gentlemen were one of the first collage artists to be known. Spanish painter Pablo Picasso and Cubist painter George Braque both dabbled into collage art during the year 1181 through 1973. Both started creating collages at about the same time while working together. Picasso's collages include Still Life with a Chair Caning and Man with a Guitar. Braque's collages were Fruit Dish and Glass and Violin and Pipe.

Private collection.  Max Ernst was a German painter, sculptor, graphic artist and a poet. He had no formal training in arts but became famous collage artists.  In 1919 Ernst visited his friend Paul Klee and created paintings, block prints and collages, and experimented with mixed media. His collages include Le Limacon de Chambre (1920) and The Postman Ceval (1932). 

Man Ray also known as Emmanuel Radintzky was an American collage artists who spent most of his career in Paris. Best known in the art world for his avant-garde photography, Man produced major works in a variety of media and considered himself a painter. Just like his peers Man also explored his talents and became famous for his collage arts such as Involute and The Revolving Doors (1916-1917), a series of ten collages.

Hannah Hoch was the first artist to create a photomontage. She was the first woman social activists who based her art on same sex couples, and women were once again a central theme in her work from. She made strong statements on racial discrimination. Among her collages are Hochfinanz, Equilibre and Made for a Party (1923 -1936).

Romare Bearden an American collage master who grew up in Harlem after his family left North Carolina in search of more opportunities. He was a fortunate man with college education. In addition to artwork, Bearden was a composer, a cartoonist, social worker, an author and a civil rights activist. His collages include Pittsburg Memory, Return of the Prodigal Son and The Calabash (1964-1970).

If you want to bond with your child and enroll in an activity together art classes is the perfect activity.  If your child is young from the ages of five and up you can choose finger paint or for teenagers drawing and collage is the best activity.  Both finger painting and drawing/collages will assist your child to express their emotions as well as enhancing their creativity.  Your child will always remember this activity throughout their lifetime.  You never know, your child can be the next Picasso.

Berta Academy: Presently teach mixed media painting classes on Saturday’s 10-1 p.m. and starting January 2011 I will have a class on Wednesday evening's 7-10 p.m.  Once a month I hold Ladies Night In with wine/cheese and we have fun releasing our Inner Artist.  This takes place on the 3rd Thursday of the month and the next one will be on Thursday, Jan. 20th.  In the spring of 2011 I will be exhibiting a mixed media show of my students work.

3. Music Therapy: Sound speaks to the soul. I offer a variety of sounds during my art instruction as a healthy way to provoke different emotions and help students tap into various layers of feeling. We are complex beings and music helps unlock elements of who we are. When varying sounds are carefully crafted together, they become an art form unto themselves. Even the sounds of nature combine to form a natural symphony. Allow the sounds and the music to create an image in your mind’s eye, or perhaps your heart. Then, illustrate that image in a tangible way for others to see.

2. Aromatherapy: The sense of smell is a powerful tool. Smells can lead to a rumble of cravings in our bellies or can warn us of toxicity. They can jog old memories buried deep within our consciousness and even alter our moods. What do you want to feel while creating? Splash a little lavender on your wrists for a calming effect. Use a tad of orange for a bit of positive, energizing vigor. When we create, we are expressing all that we touch, hear, taste and see through a most unique perspective – our own.
